Committee Reports:

Professional Development:

1. The committee held a brown bag lunch to discuss the Bryant Fellowship. It was attended by past recipients and by some librarians who might be interested in becoming applicants. Though the number of attendees was small, it was agreed that the event was successful in that the discussion was interesting and useful and that the number of applicants for the Bryant is generally not more than the number attending the brown bag lunch.

2. Upcoming program (co-sponsored by Communications and Orientation)

The Continuing Evolution of OIS Wednesday, January 26, 2000 10:00 - 11:30 am Lamont Forum Room Betsy Eggleston, eegglest@fas.harvard.edu

OIS Director Dale Flecker, Assistant Director Tracey Robinson and Senior Systems Librarian Charlie Husbands will take us on a tour of the history of OIS, the services they provide, the current projects (LDI, HOLLIS II, VIA and more), fill us in on how they function with respect to other groups at Harvard, and introduce us to the future as they see it. An opportunity for questions and answers will be provided. All library staff are invited to attend

3. The committee is working on a program (possibly for late February or early March) on copyright. They are developing the program together with the Office of the Counsel.

 Benefits Committee:

Two programs were held this fall and the committee has discussed and reviewed them. (one for Longer Service staff and one presentation on possible changes to retirement benefits) The group is considering other programs which might bring together benefits-related information/providers such as Outings and Innings, Administrators Forum, etc.

Their ongoing theme is retirement and planning for retirement. Spring programming is going to focus on financial planning. A program addressing basic questions, such as what financial planners do, why contract with one, how to contact them, and how to select a planner is being considered.

Communications and Orientation Committee:

A Library Tour and reception is planned February 29, 2000 from 3:30 – 4:45 pm in the University Archives. There will be a presentation followed by refreshments. Kate Bowers is organizing the event for the committee.

Spring Reception for New Library and Information Professionals is scheduled for March 8, 2000 and will be held this year at the Faculty Club. There was discussion of formats for the event among the Executive Committee and the suggestions will be brought back to the Communications Committee. Joe Bourneuf, Mathilda vanEs , and Elizabeth McKeigue are coordinating the reception.

The committee has sponsored three Faculty Club lunch events for new staff members, with 24 new colleagues joining various committee members. Karen Carlson Young and Phyllis Askey have coordinated the lunches for the committee.

Using the lunch as an opportunity to provide information packets for new colleagues was discussed and it was suggested that the committee could send these to new staff members as soon as possible after their arrival, rather than wait until the lunch date. The committee will meet later this week and will discuss these suggestions.
