Minutes of the Professional Development Committee meeting
October 2, 2002
Amy Boucher, Doug Campbell, Candice Feldt, Ksenya Kiebuzinski, Manda Mahoney (co-Chair), Alix Reiskind (co-Chair, minutes), Kazuko Sakaguchi, Karen Carlson Young
Members of the committee introduced themselves and spoke a little about where they are from and what they do.
Manda introduced the committee’s mission and our two main annual tasks:
Discussed the schedule for the Bryant Fellowship. Decided we should make a University-wide announcement as soon as possible to give possible applicants time to prepare. Doug Campbell and Ksenya Kiebuzinski volunteered to co-Chair the committee. We discussed the possibility of having the recipient do another presentation in addition to presenting at the Librarians Luncheon for those unable to attend the luncheon. We set the deadline date for applications at February 14, 2003. Alix will email Doug and Ksenya the HUL Notes email address and Manda will email the template(s) used to announce the fellowship in the past; this may be edited. Alix will update the PDC website.
Alix gave out the url of the PDC website and asked members to look at the site and send comments and suggestions to her.
Fall Loeb Music Library Program [Possible dates: Nov. 14, Nov. 21 or Dec. 5, 2002]
Sponsors: Candy Feldt, Alix Reiskind
Speakers: Ginny Danielson; Connie Mayer; Dave Ackerman, Sarah Adams.Topic: Loeb Music Library projects in digitizing audio materials and music scores.
Sponsors: Amy Boucher, Karen Carlson Young
Speakers: (tentative at this point) Michael Rocke (Villa I Tatti); representatives from other satellite repositories
Topics: Gather librarians from satellite libraries, such as Biblioteca Berenson (Villa I Tatti); Dumbarton Oaks; Center for Hellenic Studies; Arnold Arboretum to discuss the issues and challenges they face serving Harvard at a distance. We discussed the possibility of finding a co-sponsor for this event, possibly one of the academic departments.
Co-sponsored program with LDI:
Wendy Gogel, OIS, has approached our committee with the idea of co-sponsoring a program that is an introduction to XML and will bring in an outside speaker scheduled for December 16, 2002. The PDC thinks this sounds like a good program, but is unsure of the financial obligations. Manda and Alix will bring it up at the next Librarians Assembly Executive Committee meeting.
Arnold Arboretum Program:
Began discussing a possible spring program at the Arnold Arboretum. Concerns include whether or not it can be geared towards professional development and transportation issues, as the Arboretum is in Jamaica Plain.
Discussion and brainstorming for future programs:
Amy introduced the idea of covering the “knowledge gap” which seems to exist in some cases between those who are digitally savvy versus those who are not. How can librarians learn new technology or gain the skills they need for future jobs? Discussed possibly publishing something with ideas for continuing education or creating a website.
Discussed sponsoring a variety of programs with a central theme, such as gaining new skills and avoiding being “slotted” into one type of position. Introduced the idea of mentoring, i.e. more experienced librarians passing on their knowledge to less experienced librarians.
