Minutes of the Professional Development Committee meeting
January 22, 2003
Michael Rocke, the Nicky Mariano Librarian for the Biblioteca Berenson, has agreed to participate in a PDC sponsored program to be held either April 9 or April 10, 2003, in the Lamont Forum Room. Discussion indicated that a meeting held from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (with coffee and pastries available to participants) on April 9 followed by a luncheon afterwards would work best for the program. The Committee then submitted suggestions for the topic of the program to be finalized by Dr. Rocke. These include a historical overview of the Biblioteca Berenson and its future integration into the Harvard University Library (HUL); the Biblioteca Berensonís participation in a library consortium within Italy; the differences between the American and European library system; the skills needed for and the challenges faced by the Librarian for the Biblioteca Berenson; and how the Biblioteca Berenson serves as a resource for the HUL community (i.e. What is there? How do access its collections?).
The Chair of the Bryant Fellowship Committee, Doug Campbell, indicated that past recipients Katherine Martinez and Dennis Marnon had agreed to talk about their projects at the informational brown-bag lunch to be held on Friday, January 24, 2003. The issue was raised whether the brown-bag lunch had been sufficiently advertised since the January issue of Library Notes had yet to appear with the announcement and attempts at publicizing it via HULINFO had failed. The Committee decided to postpone the meeting to next week. The brown-bag lunch was rescheduled to take place in the Lamont Forum Room on Friday, January 31, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.. The change will be announced in HULINFO immediately.
Manda Mahoney suggested postponing the as yet tentative program to be held at the Arnold Arboretum to September or October 2003. All present agreed that between the Biblioteca Berenson program and the Bryant Fellowship that the PDC had sufficient activities for this term.
A general discussion ensued about what is the best forum in which to announce the Bryant Fellowship award.
