Minutes of the Professional Development Committee meeting

October 7, 2003

Present: Amy Boucher, Doug Campbell, Laureen Esser (co-chair), Ksenya Kiebuzinski, Manda Mahoney, Alix Reiskind (co-chair, note taker), Karen Carlson Young.

Absent: : Amira Aaron, Carol Ellerbeck

Laureen and Alix gave a report on the Librarians’ Assembly’s Executive Committee meeting. Discussed the Executive Committee’s fall program ideas.

Fall Program: Reviewed plans for the program at the Arnold Arboretum scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2003, 1:30 - 4:30pm. Alix reviewed the outline of the program at the Arboretum organized by Sheila Connor, Horticultural Research Archivist. We discussed transportation to the Arboretum and decided a group could meet and take the T over together. After much discussion, we decided to organize an informal gathering at Doyle’s in Jamaica Plain after the program for any participants who would like to join.

Bryant Fellowship : Decided on the closing date for applications for the Bryant Fellowship. It is February 20, 2004 and there will be a brown bag lunch about a month before the application deadline. Ksenya will send an announcement to HULNotes for the November publication and will make information flyers to be distributed to libraries. There was a brief discussion about the possibility of increasing the amount of the Bryant Fellowship.

Mentor program: It has been decided that the Mentor Program will be further investigated and organized by a sub-committee made up of three members from each of the following committees: Professional Development, Rights & Responsibilities and Communication and Orientation. The three PDC members who are interested in the sub-committee are Karen, Amy and Doug and possibly Laureen depending on the numbers from other committees. They will meet in October 2003.

Future programs: Decided we should have two more programs for 2003-2004, a winter program and a spring program.

Winter program: Amira submitted an idea for a program that will give a general introduction to digital projects: introductory 2-hour educational session about digital libraries, projects, etc. - for those who just want to learn more about it. She suggested it be jointly sponsored between LDI and PDC; we will discuss further at our next meeting. Manda and Amira will be the sponsors of this program.

Spring program ideas: Discussed various ideas for spring programs, including something exploring the role of the library at Dumbarton Oaks; partnerships between museums and libraries; and the on-going tracking project of artwork owned by Harvard.

Next meeting: Wednesday, November 12, 9:30-11am at the Ukrainian Research Institute, 1583 Massachusetts Ave.
