Minutes of the Professional Development Committee meeting

February 11, 2004

Present: Amira Aaron, Amy Boucher, Doug Campbell, Laureen Esser (co-chair), Ksenya Kiebuzinski, Alix Reiskind (co-chair, note taker), Manda Salls, Karen Carlson-Young

Absent: Carol Ellerbeck

Winter program: The “Introduction to Library Digital Projects” program went extremely well. We estimated approximately 50 attendees. The two tours following the program were also a success, however the first one was too full - if we offer similar tours in the future we may want to have tighter control on the numbers. Wendy Gogel and Sue Kriegsman were energetic and informative presenters and Bill Comstock gave two fascinating tours of the Digital Imaging Group - thank-yous were sent to all three. We’ve received very positive feedback and are grateful to Amira and Manda for organizing such an educational and interesting program.

Bryant Fellowships: The brown bag lunch took place Friday, January 16. Ksenya presented the background of the award and two of last year’s recipients spoke about their projects. There was good attendance (approximately 20 people); many questions and enthusiasm. Doug reported that as of our meeting they have received 1 application and know of 2 others interested in the award.

Spring program: Doug has been in touch with the head of Countway Library solidifying our spring program. The plan is to design a lecture and tour of the Countway Library for the end of April. Discussed transportation possibilities, decided the LMA Shuttle is the best way to commute out there.

Mentoring Subcommittee: The subcommittee is planning on submitting a proposal to the LAEC. They are also designing a survey for Assembly members to better gauge what people want out of the program. Discussed that it has been decided that this is a good time for this program as it is hoped to build structure and be good for future growth.

LAEC: Laureen and Alix gave a report on the Librarians’ Assembly’s Executive Committee meeting and the Assembly’s upcoming program.

Future program discussion: Brief discussion about the possibility of visiting the Harvard Depository. Further discussion of a program focused on iCommons, possibly for mid-fall 2004. Laureen spoke more on the possibility of a program on scholarly communication citing recent initiatives of the Physics Department here at Harvard.

Future meetings: The Committee decided that the PDC will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month through May 2004.

Next meeting: Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 9:30-11am, in the Gropius Room at the Harvard Design School..
