Minutes of the Professional Development Committee Meeting

April 11, 2006
HCL Technical Services, Reading Room

PRESENT: Michael Bradford, Jia Lin Jin, Ann Robinson (co-chair), Craig Thomas (co-chair), Inés Zalduendo (recording)

ABSENT: Kathy Rutter Hunter, Brad Schaffner (LAEC Liaison), Kathleen Sheehan, Andrea Schulman

  1. Bryant Fellowship: Inés reported that the Bryant Fellowship award letters were sent out by Sidney Verba on March 13th, and followed with letters from the Bryant Fellowship Committee. The recipients and their topics will be announced in the May issue of Harvard University Library Notes. Inés will make sure all four recipients forward a brief summary of their projects to Peter Kosewski, HULs director of publications and communications for this purpose, and that they (recipients and jury) receive invitations to the Librarian' luncheon to be held for the recipients. Inés also reported that she had forwarded copies of all applications to Wadsworth house for record purposes. Wadsworth House is responsible for updating recipients on the Bryant Fellowship page.
  2. Book Digitization Projects Program/Dale Flecker Program: Kathy sent out an email to the PDC indicating that the program on the topic by Dale Flecker is tentatively being set for June 14th at the Science Center.
  3. Lecture with Diane Rapaport: Cancellation of the April 10th brown-bag due to a medical emergency in the lecturer's family was appropriately announced through HULINFO by Kathleen, and Craig forwarded signs to Lynn Sayers for her to post on Lamont Forum Room doors. Malcolm Hamilton will try to re-schedule the lecture for the future.
  4. iSite: Craig is regularly posting PDC information (e.g. meeting dates and directions). He is still backing up with email announcements until PDC members get into the habit of checking the iSite regularly.
  5. PDC Website: Michael reported that most updates have been done, the committee agreed that the format was appropriate to go ahead and post on the web. Michael will also develop a calendar that may be updated on a yearly basis. He will consult with Kathleen to incorporate the blogging links developed by Andrea. Michael will forward content to Craig Thomas for update of the PDC website in the near future.
  6. Other: Inés suggested considering Bryant Fellowship recipients as lecturers in future PDC programs. Both because of the quality of research being developed and, in particular, because many are topics specific to Harvard. Craig followed with the idea that a lecture series could be established with the recipients of the previous year. This will be discussed further when setting the PDC program for next year, and Ann will bring it up at the next LAEC meeting.
  7. Next Meeting: May 9th, Special Collections, Frances Loeb Library, 48 Quincy Street, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Inés Zalduendo
