HOLLIS CIRCULATION LIAISONS MEETING

July 6, 1999 9:15-10:45 OIS Conference Room

Informal Meeting Notes

Introductions

Old Business

  1. Rollover of address hierarchy for undergraduate printed notices effective as of June 10, graduation day. (MC: will switch back in September)
  2. HOLLIS performance issues.  (We reviewed memos that Charles Husbands had sent out to hulinfo subscribers, and discussed the issues in general. There was some agreement that for circulation related activities, performance had improved lately, but there was also general concern as expected about ongoing HOLLIS performance. OIS is working on the problems and will keep librarians informed via hulinfo).
  3. Scott Britton: question about the timing of AR bills and waiving fines and fees online. (w/MC - no update)

New Business

  1. New Circ libraries (setting up this summer, for fall implementation):
    1. Morse Music: regular and reserve service units
    2. Chemistry Library: barcoding and circulation
    3. Littauer reserve service unit, and RV participation
    4. Rubel: barcoding and circulation
    5. Development Office: barcoding only
  2. GQL upgrade this summer: announcement soon (MC: went out to hdr-users on 7/9)
  3. (K. Medin, law) Recall notice that had a 'return by' date that corresponded with the date of production. (MC: this has to do with there not being a RECALL policy defined for EXAM loans, so by default it is set to 0,0,0 causing an immediate recall due date. MC and Law need to review this).
  4. Search lists have re-appeared at Fine Arts and Countway - OIS looking into this. May be related to the 9/9/99 change.
  5. MC described a bug in circ transactions that is new as of the last couple of months, having to do with the charge timestamp. See description. OIS is close to having a fix for this.
  6. Karin Media asked about coding of piece level information on item record, citing conflicting preferences and practice at the Law School between circ and tech services staff. The group felt that this was more appropriately an issue for tech services than circ liaisons, and advised checking with bib standards, or at least with other tech services librarians.

TIMESTAMP PROBLEM: DIFFERENT BEHAVIOR IN NEW ONLINE PROGRAMS

This was reviewed at the July circ-l meeting. OIS is close to having a fix. In the meantime, the problem is readily worked around (see description).

SUMMARY: In new production program, the timestamp does not change until the operator presses PF10 or CLEAR.

To reproduce:

STEP 1.

CLEAR SCREEN.

STEP 2.

MCRV CHAR

Enter Patron ID and press ENTER

NOTE date and time at upper right of screen

STEP 3.

Enter item id and press ENTER

NOTE date and time at upper right of screen

STEP 4.

Press PF10 in anticipation of another patron charge

WAIT a few minutes

STEP 5.

Enter Patron ID and press ENTER

NOTE date and time at upper right of screen

In old version, the timestamp will be updated to the current time after you enter patron id and before entering item id.

If you continue to charge items to the same patron the timestamp is updated at each charge.

In new version, the timestamp will NOT be updated to the current time, but will remain frozen at the time of the last charge.

If you continue to charge items to the same patron the timestamp is not updated at each charge.

STEP 6. In both cases, the timestamp is updated upon pressing PF10 or CLEAR after a charge has been made.

However -- a common practice is to clear the screen between patrons in anticipation of the next charge. In new version, even though the timestamp is updated upon hitting PF10 or CLEAR, because the timestamp is not updated when an item is charged, the effect is that the time has 'frozen' on the screen.
