Amira Aaron described the Ex Libris products, SFX and METALIB. SFX is currently operating at Harvard and is getting up to 2000 hits per day. SFX is used to link articles found in certain source databases, including OCLC First Search, RLG indexes, INSPEC, Elsevier Science Direct, ISI Web of Knowledge, ProQuest, OVID, etc., with the records for the journals in the HOLLIS Catalog. Additional potential targets include encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographies and e-books. SFX holds the possibility of use for linking any type of record with a full-text online resource.
METALIB, another ExLibris product, is a searching tool that allows the searching of several databases at the same time through HTTP searching, Z39.50, etc. METALIB can be customized and could potentially be used to search licensed databases for which records are not available in the HOLLIS Catalog.
Ruth Haas presented a draft document prepared by the Standing Subcommittee on Serials, Series and Continuations (SSSSC) on the use of URLs in 5XX fields. Subfield u containing the URL has been approved by the MARBI Committee for use in several note fields in the bibliographic record. Catalogers at Harvard have been encouraged to wait to implement these subfields until standards for their use can be defined for the HOLLIS Catalog.
The draft document was discussed and members the Standing Subcommittee on Bibliograpbic Standards and Policy will send comments to Ruth.
The next meeting will be held June 9, 2003, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.
