E-Books in Aleph: Proposal for New Sublibrary Codes

Amira Aaron presented a paper that she and Kathleen Anderson had written detailing a proposal for new sublibrary codes to be assigned to holdings for electronic books. The proposal was created in preparation for dealing with an increasing volume of e-books records. It was written with an eye toward satisfying user and staff needs to limit searches and easily identify which titles have an electronic version. It would also allow staff to batch process records supplied by vendors and would accommodate both the single record and the separate record approach.

Authority Records in Aleph

Bruce Trumble presented revisions to the Standing Subcommittee’s document on Authority Records in Aleph. There was some discussion on when authority records need to be imported from the national authority file and some corrections were offered. Bruce Trumble will make the corrections and present the final draft at the next meeting of the Standing Subcommittee.

Document Revision: MARC 21 Holdings Records in AlephDocument

Steven Riel and Elizabeth Eggleston presented the revisions they had made to the document MARC 21 Holdings Records in Aleph Helen Schmierer suggested that, at this point, the entire document needs to be rewritten to bring it into line with Holdings Records in the HOLLIS Catalog: Standards and Guidelines that has been recently revised the Standing Subcommittee on Serials, Series and Continuing Resources. Helen Schmierer will rework the MARC 21 Holdings Records in Aleph document and present a new version at a later meeting of the Standing Subcommittee.

ANSI/NISO Z39.71 Revision

The ANSI/NISO Standard Z37.71, Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items, is currently under review by NISO. The current standard has been in place since 1999. NISO revises all of its standards on a five year cycle. Ruth Haas asked that members of the Standing Subcommittee who wish to make comments to be forwarded to NISO do so before the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Diego.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be held February 9, 2004, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.
