Description of repository / collection image holdings:

The Center's image holdings include an estimated 20,000 photographs, lantern slides, glass plate negatives, engravings, and prints of physicians and scientists; 3,200 glass lantern slides depicting medical  conditions, diseases, specimens, and instruments, hospitals, and wards; scrapbooks and photographs of 800 hospitals and medical institutions, including Harvard’s affiliated hospitals; ca. 100 panorama and over-sized mounted photographs of professional associations and student groups; and a variety of images of students, faculty members, and patients, as well as personal photographs in manuscript collections. Descriptions of series of historical images of Harvard faculty, students, staff, interiors, buildings, and campuses can be found in Hollis and in OASIS; more than 1,200 digitized images are embedded in OASIS finding aids.

What we have in VIA:

Countway holdings cataloged in VIA include historical images of the Harvard Medical School campuses and buildings, faculty, and students; images from the Richard Pearson Strong collection, taken in 1911 of the response to the plague outbreak in Manchuria, and eighteenth and nineteenth century satirical prints of medical subjects.

The material in this collection is owned or held by the Center for the History of Medicine.
