Description of The Center for Hellenic Studies
The Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) is a research institute affiliated with Harvard University located in Washington D.C. It was founded in 1962 by means of an endowment made "exclusively for the establishment of an educational center in the field of Hellenic Studies designed to re-discover the humanism of the Hellenic Greeks." This humanistic vision remains the driving force of The Center for Hellenic Studies.
The Center’s library consists of over 55,000 volumes, of which approximately one-third are periodicals. The library’s coverage includes archaic, classical, Hellenistic and early imperial Greek literature, history, religion, art, archaeology, epigraphy, papyrology, numismatics and philosophy (through Late Antiquity). Collections in Latin Literature and Roman Studies are less complete, but very useful for comparative purposes and interdisciplinary projects.

Description of Image Holdings
Since the library was originally conceived as a philology collection, the CHS currently has no physical image collection onsite. The CHS has recently committed to the ongoing process of developing an online database of study images to support the rapidly growing art and archaeology portions of collection.
What's in VIA?
The Center’s image holdings in VIA currently comprise about 400 images gathered from research and educational projects at the CHS. These images cover a wide spectrum of art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean.
In October 2006, the Center added a pilot batch of 100 images drawn from late 19th and early 20th century photographs of Greek and Roman archaeological sites and museum artifacts. Plans are being developed to add as many as 2000 similar images over the next two years, forming the nucleus of a database of images for use in the study and teaching of ancient Greek and Roman art and archaeology.
