FAQ for Authors of Dissertations

What are the Archives' requirements for the bound copy of my dissertation?

    • See Harvard University Archives' requirements for dissertations

What if my research could result in a patent?

    • Consult with your department and the registrar regarding patent registration.
    • Do not send your dissertation to the Archives until the legal work is complete!

What happens to the bound dissertation in the Archives?

This record copy is kept permanently and is:
    • cataloged in HOLLIS
    • stored at HD
    • made available to readers in the Archives' reading room only. (It does not circulate.)

Can I restrict access to the Archives' copy of my dissertation?

Yes, restrictions last for five years. To restrict your dissertation, the Archives requires:
    • a letter from you (the author)
    • a letter from the chair of your department.
Send these letters to:
      University Archivist
      Harvard University Archives
      Pusey Library, Cambridge, MA 02138.
Please note: A restriction on the Archives’ copy of your dissertation is separate from any restriction you
may negotiate with UMI ProQuest regarding the availability of your dissertation on microfiche or
      in electronic form.

Can I submit a digital dissertation?

Not yet, but you can submit supplementary data on CD.
    • CDs must accompany the dissertation in a pocket in the binding.
    • Submit duplicate digital data on media (CDs) from two different manufacturers to reduce the
      possibility of media failure.
    • Include on each CD a plain-text readme file with the following information:
        – Author’s name
        – Dissertation title
        – Date
        – File format information
    • Use TIFF file format for images.
    • Use medium density storage for sound recordings.
    • Please call us at 617-495-2461 if you have questions about digital material. If we cannot answer your
question, we will consult with experts.
Please note: the Archives does not guarantee to be able to preserve these digital files over the long term.
