University Administrative Records
University administrative records are restricted for a period of fifty years. For access to records less than fifty years old, researchers must get written permission from the current director of the department or office that created them. Contact our reference staff for assistance.
Personnel and Student Records
Personnel and student records are restricted for eighty years. For access to student records less than eighty years old, researchers must contact the registrar of the school in which the student was enrolled.
Records of student, alumni, faculty, and staff organizations
The same terms of access for University records apply to these records. For access to records less than fifty years old, researchers must get written permission from the current president of the organization. Contact our reference staff for assistance.
Faculty Papers
Terms of access to faculty papers are established by the donor and vary from one collection to another. Please consult with the reference staff regarding terms of access to specific collections.
Please note that some faculty collections include University administrative, student, or personnel records; these are subject to the terms of access to University records described above.
Dissertations and theses
While nearly all dissertations and theses held by the University Archives are available for use in the reading room, the following restrictions apply to photocopying
- For photocopies of any senior honors thesis less than five years old, the author's written permission is required.
- The Archives will not photocopy PhD dissertations written after 1981. For copies, researchers should contact University Microfilms International.
