Submitting Reference Inquiries

Our Reference Staff welcomes your inquiries relating to all aspects of the history of Harvard University.

Please be as specific as possible when requesting information (e.g. "Please send me the name of the first tenured female professor at Harvard.") as limited staff time prevents us from answering broad research questions (e.g. "Please send me information about the history of women at Harvard").

We answer reference requests in the order in which we receive them. You can expect a response within several weeks. Please note that we will provide the following:

  • Biographical information for up to three individuals per request.
  • Identification and copy order information for up to three photographs from our holdings per request.
  • You can order photocopies of Archives holdings, though certain fees and restrictions apply.

Reference inquiries may be submitted via our contact form.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

If you are planning a research visit to the University Archives, please contact us five business days before you arrive, as many of our collections are stored off-site and may be restricted based upon the terms of access.
