Visual materials in the Archives include drawings, prints, and an extensive collection of photographs. The photograph holdings date from the 1850s through the late twentieth century and provide a rich source of information about the life of the University, as well as about the history of photography.
Many of the Archives' photographs are described in the following inventories. Selected images are available online in VIA. Most of the Archives’ photographic holdings must be viewed on site in the Archives reading room.

- Photographs of the Harvard University campus and environs taken by William M. Rittase, ca. 1930 (HUV 2332).
- Photographs of the Harvard University campus and environs taken by George K. Warren, 1860 (HUV 2260.5).
Other photographs can be found among the administrative records of the University, the records of associated organizations, and the personal papers of faculty members.
The Archives does not provide picture research. Please visit our reading room to view and select images. Or, you may send a representative to our reading room on your behalf.
Image Copy Requests
The University Archives can provide digital reproductions of most holdings.
All image copy requests must be placed in writing using our Contact Form. Requests must include specific citations for each image (including call number and item numbers where necessary).
PRICES (high resolution scan on CD)
- Flat original (up to 8 x 10): $25 plus delivery
- Original in bound volume (up to 8 x 10): $35 plus delivery
- Delivery: $10 (domestic), $25 (international)
Additional costs apply for special handling or oversize (larger than 8” X 10”) items.
Please note the following:
- Pre-payment is required. Checks should be made payable to the Harvard University Archives. Credit cards are not accepted at this time.
- Once payment is received, copy orders take at least six weeks to process.
