Harvard and World War II research guide

This subject guide is an introduction to the wide variety of collections and materials which document the many aspects of the University's administrative, academic, and student life in the years leading up to, during, and immediately following the Second World War (1937-1949). In addition to the holdings listed below, relevant information may be found in other collections of personal papers and departmental records located in the University Archives and at Harvard's numerous other special collections and archival repositories.

Includes general information about all aspects of the University prior, during, and after the war years. Of particular interest are materials relating to military training programs and current events. Consists of newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, leaflets, notices, addresses, and speeches. Organized in chronological order.

Plant and Property
Buildings (HUB 1xxx)
These records document wartime and post-war construction of new facilities, such as laboratories and dormitories, as well as the re-use and re-configuration of existing buildings to support the war effort. Organized alphabetically by building name.

Academic Activities
Commencement, Class Day, and Exhibitions - (HUC 69.xx.xx)
These records document wartime and military Commencement activities. Includes photographs, Commencement programs, addresses and speeches, accounts of exercises, and materials relating to alumni events.

  • Curriculum - (HUC 89.xx.xx)
    Records document wartime curriculum and the reorganization of departments to support war effort. Materials include syllabi, course outlines, handbooks, laboratory manuals, reading lists, courses of instruction, student notes, student papers, and examination books.

Student Life and Activities

Of particular interest are the Class Anniversary Reports and questionnaires, Freshman Red Books, Class Albums (Yearbooks), and Class Secretaries' correspondence.
