Copyright Guidelines for the Library Digital Initiative

Most of the materials created as part of the Library Digital Initiative are owned, held or licensed by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. They are being provided solely for the purpose of teaching
or individual research.

Any other use, including commercial reuse, mounting on other systems or other forms of redistribution requires permission of the appropriate office of Harvard University.

Boilerplate Copyright Statements

There are a number of common resources that are being developed as part of the Library Digital Initiative. The first of these involves boilerplate copyright statements that should appear both as general language for Harvard-specific LDI resources, and specific language for individual digital objects:

General Copyright Statement
(used on "top end" screens for any given collection)

"Most of these materials are owned, held or licensed by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. They are being provided solely for the purpose of teaching or individual research. Any other use, including commercial reuse, mounting on other systems, or other forms of redistribution requires permission of the appropriate office of Harvard University."

Specific Item Statement
(accessible via link from individual resources)

"This material is owned, held or licensed by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. It is being provided solely for the purpose of teaching or individual research. Any other use, including commercial reuse, mounting on other systems, or other forms of redistribution requires permission of the appropriate office of Harvard University."

Copyright Guidelines for the Library Digital Initiative

Members of the Harvard community and LDI participants should also refer to the PDF version of Copyright Guidelines For The Library Digital Initiative, a document prepared in March 1999 by Robert Donin of the Office of the General Counsel. Note: This document is restricted to the Harvard community, and may not be disclosed or distributed without the permission of the Harvard University Office of the General Counsel.
