The Library Digital Initiative (LDI) is building
a common infrastructure, comprised of union catalogs and a
set of storage and delivery services that will enable Harvard
to effectively manage its networked collections.
Catalogs
Libraries have traditionally facilitated discovery
of their holdings through catalogs and finding aids. When
these tools became available online through automated systems,
gaining access to the holdings still meant a visit to the
library or a special loan request. However, the new digital
library systems combine these functions: They not only allow
discovery, but also deliver content. The first infrastructure
projects were catalogs and indexes to helps users identify
and locate available resources. HOLLIS Catalog is a key component
of the infrastructure, but is not adequate for the types of
materials likely to be in our digital collections, including
photographs, prints, and other visual materials, contents
of archival collections, and page images of text.
The Catalogs web page contains information
about HOLLIS, VIA, OLIVIA, OASIS, HGL, BIL, TED and HMDC.
Delivery
Services
The Library Digital Initiative developing a
suite of services that will retrieve and deliver to web browsers
some of the most common digital objects stored in the Digital
Repository Services (DRS).
The Delivery Services web page contains information
about Image Delivery Service (IDS), Page Delivery Service
(PDS), Full Text Search Service (FTS), Streaming Delivery
Service (SDS) and Asynchronous Delivery Service (ADS).
Storage
and Access Management
Storage and access management ensures persistent
and secure archiving and retrieval of digital material. A
central set of services is designed to integrate seamlessly
with systems and applications employed by LDI.
The Storage and Access Management web page
contains information about Digital Repository Services (DRS),
Access Management Services (AMS), and Name Resolution Service
(NRS).

Projects
Through LDI, the Harvard University Library
engages in pilots, trials, and research projects where participants
collaborate with other institutions, develop new and effective
strategies, and contribute to ongoing research efforts.
The Related Projects web page contains information
about LDI efforts in digital preservation and in library and
user services. The page also maintains a list of previous
projects.
