BACKGROUND
The Task Group on Discovery and Metadata outlined a set of recommendations in their Final Report published last September (http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic117213.files/TGDM_final_report_Sept_07.pdf ). One result of their work was the identification of key new functions and attributes which characterize the new generation of library catalogs/discovery systems. With these target characteristics in mind, a Discovery Platform Task Force has been formed to assess the options for a new discovery platform for the Harvard University libraries, and to recommend a course of action to the University Library Council (ULC). As part of its study the Task Force will review systems that are being implemented by peer institutions, and the motivations and criteria which led to their selection.
