June Cataloging Discussion Group
Friday June 11, 2010, 11:00-12:30
Lamont Forum Room

RDA at Harvard

In June, the new standard for descriptive cataloging, Resource Description and Access (RDA) will be available. Some libraries will adopt RDA right away and begin to contribute RDA master records to WorldCat. In the United States, the Library of Congress will conduct a nine month RDA test before deciding whether to adopt the new standard.† At Harvard, the decision has been made to accept RDA records from WorldCat and other sources into HOLLIS, but to wait for the results of the Library of Congress testing before creating original cataloging with RDA.

As RDA records created by non-Harvard libraries begin appearing in†OCLC/WorldCat, Harvard acquisitions staff and catalogers will need to know how to identify the records and how to handle them in HOLLIS.

Please join us for an informational meeting about the new standard and plans within the Harvard technical services community to prepare for RDA.† Following a presentation on the background of RDA, we will hear how Harvard is planning for the new standard.† Examples of the new records will be given, along with initial instructions regarding what to do when encountering RDA records within an acquisitions and cataloging workflow.

Because acquisitions staff will likely be first to encounter RDA records, acquisitions staff are also encouraged to attend this meeting.

About the Cataloging Discussion Group:

The Cataloging Discussion Group ("CDG") has existed for several years as a forum for Harvard catalogers and anyone else interested in cataloging-related issues to discuss topics and trends germane to our profession in an informal and unofficial setting. Our discussions range from ALA reports (Midwinter and Annual), to topics addressing local policy, to broader trends within the cataloging profession. Very often we will schedule a presentation by a guest speaker or speakers followed by an open discussion.

Although the Bibliographic Standards Working Group shares its iSite "space" with the CDG, we are completely autonomous, and our topics and any ensuing discussions may not necessarily reflect the official policies and standards promulgated by the Bibliographic Standards Working Group.

To recommend a topic for an upcoming meeting, or to volunteer to give a presentation, please contact the organizers. We welcome your suggestions! All are welcome to attend. We generally meet on a monthly basis (usually, but not always, Fridays from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm) in the Lamont Forum Room. Our meetings are announced via HULINFO and the HUL Calendar. Also check our Calendar of Upcoming Meetings on this iSite for announcements.
