Subject: Aleph Update: New call number indexes in HOLLIS Catalog OPAC
This message will be of interest to public services staff and other OPAC users.
After 5 p.m. today, December 4, the HOLLIS Catalog OPAC will have a new format for
call number browses. Currently, browsing by a call number, such as
Library of Congress Call Number, from the basic search screen returns a
result with call numbers and the number of things that have that call
number. Since there is no title information associated with the call
numbers, these results displays have limited use or appeal.
With the re-indexing that was done last month, we were able to change the
format of the call number browses so that the results include title
information.
Here is a comparison of results for a browse of the LC call number 'JK 274'
Current format:
1 JK274 .A37x 1967
1 JK274 .A544 1953
New format:
JK274 .A37x 1967 Our constitution and government :
JK274 .A544 1953 American government for Pennsylvanians
Some things to note about these new displays:
1) We were not able to include author information along with the title at
this time, but felt this partial enhancement was still valuable.
2) There will be 20 entries per browse results page instead of the
current 10 entries.
3) There will be multiple entries for some call numbers such as new items
sent to the depository with only a broad class number. For
instance, a browse of the LC call number "PN" will show up in the result
list 9 times with different titles. In the current display, there is one
"PN" line, with the number 9 to indicate 9 things have that call number.
4) A new index for Su DOCs has been added.
If you have questions or comments, please contact the new MetaPAC Committee, which has assumed ongoing oversight of the HOLLIS Catalog.
