Aleph Update: Searching Headings using F3 and F4

This message will be of interest to staff who use the Aleph cataloging client.

Next Thursday, May 17th, new functionality will be introduced to enhance the searching capabilities of F3 and F4 function keys.  The new functionality includes:

Searching by subfield
Catalogers who create and edit records with parallel fields (and are not able to use F3 because of subfield $$6) will be able to search Romanized and vernacular headings in the Author, Title and Series indexes using F4.

F4 will allow Author/Uniform title headings to be searched separately as name or title headings in the Author and Title indexes.

Searching CJK indexes
Vernacular indexes for Chinese, Japanese and Korean authors and titles (AUVC, AUVJ, AUVK, TIVC, TIVJ, TIVK) will be included in the 'Select Scan Code' dropdown list that displays when 'Jump to' is selected.

Searching additional fields
F3 and F4 will be available for searching headings in 770, 772, 775, 777, 780 and 785 fields in the Author and Title indexes. Varying form of title in the 246 field will also be searchable.

Other changes
- GEN will be moved to the top of the 'Select Scan Code' list
- GEN will be searched by default when using Ctrl+F3 to search personal names, corporate names or conference names that appear in 4XX, 7XX, 8XX or 6XX fields.

Detailed information on F3 and F4 functionality is available in Searching Headings using F3 and F4, a new document on the Cataloging page of the Aleph documentation Web site.

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions.

Thanks,
Allison Powers (on behalf of the Cataloging Team)
