What is Batch Builder?

Batch Builder is a desktop application that simplifies the process of depositing batches of digital files to the DRS. Given a directory of digital files and a small amount of administrative metadata, Batch Builder will generate the batch control file (batch.xml) that must accompany a batch of digital objects deposited into the DRS. Once a batch is prepared, the depositor will use secure FTP to upload the batch to the appropriate DRS drop box.

Batch Builder is a stand-alone java-based application compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. The application can be downloaded from the DRS Depositors iSite. If you have trouble accessing the iSite please contact the Digital Projects Team in OIS. Instructions on installing and using Batch Builder can be found in the User Guide.

Batch Builder is developed and supported by the Harvard University Library Office for Information Systems (OIS).

What digital files are eligible?

Batch Builder currently supports batches of still image files, batches of page-turned files, batches of PDF files and batches of container objects, including: dark PDS document containers and opaque containers. More detailed requirements for each batch type are described in the User Guide.

Who can use Batch Builder?

The audience for this application includes organizations and individuals who are responsible for the deposit of digital files to DRS. This might include organizations inside or outside of Harvard who play a role in a Harvard digitization project. Batch Builder may also be appropriate for Harvard curators who need to play the DRS depositor role in a local digitization project.

To use Batch Builder, a user must be able to supply valid DRS administrative metadata such as DRS owner code, billing code, and an NRS authority path. To deposit batches generated by Batch Builder, a user must have a DRS dropbox account. See How to become a deposit agent for more information.
