Overview: HOLLIS

HOLLIS is the library catalog for Harvard University. It contains records for millions of books, journals, manuscripts, government documents, maps, microforms, music scores, sound recordings, visual materials, data files, and more. The catalog is updated continually as material is ordered, received, and processed. Two search interfaces are available, HOLLIS and HOLLIS Classic.

There are several important differences between HOLLIS and HOLLIS Classic:

Scope: The traditional collections of books, journals, manuscripts, etc. are covered in both HOLLIS and HOLLIS Classic. HOLLIS additionally searches a wider array of materials including finding aids for archives and special collections, images from visual collections, and enhanced tables of contents.

Search/Browse: Use HOLLIS for keyword searching with relevance-ranked results and refinable result lists. Use HOLLIS Classic for browsing lists of authors, titles, subjects, or for searching/browsing call numbers.

Non-Latin scripts: To search using non-Latin scripts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, etc.), use HOLLIS Classic. Both HOLLIS and HOLLIS Classic display non-Latin scripts.

Neither HOLLIS or HOLLIS Classic currently supports article level searches. To locate articles, or narrow your focus to e-resources and e-journals, consult E-Research at Harvard Libraries.

More information on using system can be found on the HOLLIS Help page and in the Documentation Center.
