Installing XMetal
XMetal Author 4.x is available from JustSystems (http://na.justsystems.com/). Below are some installation instructions. See also the XMetal Tips page.
- Installing the rules file.
The "rules" file is the Harvard EAD schema. Follow instructions for getting the EAD to download the EAD schema.
Save the schema file to the "Rules" folder in the XMetal directory (usually C:/Program Files/Corel/XMetal 4/Author/Rules). Many users change the file name to "ead.xsd" for the sake of simplicity. - Using a style sheet.
XMetal's greatest value is that it can assist authors by providing a customized look for their documents during an editing session, but this requires use of a cascading style sheet.
To help authors get started, a copy of the style sheet used by Harvard University Archives is available here:
http://hul.harvard.edu/ois/xml/xsd/oasis/supportFiles/ead.css
Save the style sheet to the 'display' subfolder in the XMetal directory (usually C:/Program Files/Corel/XMetal 4/Author). - There are three views of your XML document in XMetal.
Two of these views, "normal" and "tags on," rely on the cascading style sheet to format the document. Using different formats for different elements can be of great assistance during markup. The style sheet, whose file name is ead.css, can also be edited in any text editor (if you use a word processor, like MSWord instead of Notepad or Wordpad; be sure to save it as "plain text"). For more information on cascading style sheets, see http://xml.coverpages.org/css.html
