The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), the Boston Medical Library (BML), and the Countway Library of Medicine at Harvard Medical School have collaborated to establish a Branch Library at MMS’s new headquarters in Waltham. The Massachusetts Medical Society Branch of the Boston Medical Library opened its doors in February 2000, with the arrival of the Branch Librarian, Elizabeth Fitzpayne.

The Branch Library is the brainchild of Mary Lou Boyse, M.D., past President of MMS, and Leonard Morse, M.D., President of BML. At the Branch Library, Society members have access to the expertise and resources of an onsite reference and education librarian. The Branch houses a carefully developed reference collection and, in the near future, will display MMS historical documents and medical artifacts as well. The Branch is open to members of the Boston Medical Library and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

"The BML Branch at the Massachusetts Medical Society is a bold and exciting undertaking that will link physicians and staff at MMS headquarters with the knowledge and resources available through Countway Library, itself an amalgamation of the Boston Medical Library and the Harvard Medical School library, and will open avenues for further collaboration and exchange,” noted Judith Messerle, Director of the Countway Library.

Ms. Fitzpayne was most recently Hospital Librarian at the Malden Medical Center. She brings with her extensive experience in medical and academic libraries and previously ran the Science Library at Brandeis University.

The BML Branch Library is located at MMS Headquarters, 1440 Main Street, Waltham. The Librarian can be contacted at 781-434-7691 or by email at
