The Harvard University Library has been delivering electronic resources via the Web since 1994, when the navigational system HOLLIS Plus was launched with 17 resources available. The system now provides access to over 1,400 electronic resources and also allows direct access to the online catalogs, library Web sites, and information about the libraries at Harvard in a newly designed interface to be known as HOLLIS. Notable American Women (NAW) became a project affiliated with the Schlesinger Library last year. The project updates the biographical series long associated with the Schlesinger Library. Volume 5 will include women of note who died during the period 1976 through 1999. The staff is selecting 500 to 600 women from a pool of several thousand candidates. More…

lorence Fearrington HRP ’61 and her husband James W. Needham recently endowed the position of Florence Fearrington Librarian of Houghton Library. The announcement of the gift was made at a dinner last spring in honor of Ms. Fearrington and Mr. Needham who earlier this year endowed the James W. Needham Chief Conservator for Special Collections in the Harvard University Library and the Harvard College Library (currently held by Pamela Spitzmueller). More…

During this time, the Visiting Committee received a an update on the past year from Sidney Verba, Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library and from Nancy M. Cline, Roy E. Larsen Librarian of Harvard College. “I haven’t missed a column in eight years,” says Cheryl LaGuardia, as she quickly knocks on the wooden drawer atop her desk. LaGuardia is Head of Instructional Services for the Harvard College Library (HCL), and has written and edited the column “Database and Disc Reviews” in Library Journal for those eight years. On July 9, 2000, Francine Fialkoff, Editor of Library Journal, presented LaGuardia with the magazine’s “E-Media Reviewer of the Year” award, established in honor of LaGuardia’s column. More…
