Carol Alexander Celebrates 45 Years of Service

It has been 45 years since Carol Alexander, Head of the Periodical Room in Widener, began working at Harvard immediately after high school. "Of course I remember," she says about her first day here. "It was a Thursday, September 16, 1955." Alexander worked in the Lamont stacks until 1958, when she moved to the Widener Periodical Room, which then held about 3,000 periodicals. Today, Carol Alexander is Head of the Periodical Room-which today accommodates 18 to 20 thousand volumes. "I have loved working at Harvard," Alexander says, "because of the kindness and generosity of spirit I have encountered not only from patrons and staff, but also from students and scholars."
