ULC Committees Update
With the ULC's new committee structure in place and new web materials available through http://hul.harvard.edu/resources/committees.html, it's important to summarize the new committee structure and to outline the various committee-related materials available through the HUL web site.
The ULC and the Overall Committee Structure
The University Library Council (ULC) is the coordinating body for policy and planning in the Harvard University Library. The ULC is chaired by the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library and its members include the Roy E. Larsen Librarian of Harvard College and the chief librarians of the other faculty libraries; the associate librarians of Harvard College; and the associate directors of the Harvard University Library.
Visit the ULC's web page at http://hul.harvard.edu/resources/committees/ulc.html, and explore the ULC iSite at http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k15372.
To execute its charge on behalf of the Harvard libraries and their many stakeholders, the ULC convenes and oversees numerous committees which function on one of four basic levels: coordinating committees, standing committees, working groups, and affinity groups.
These are committees directly under the University Library Council (ULC). Each coordinating committee oversees a set of committees within its purview. Each is chaired by a member of the ULC and will generally include several other members of the ULC, as well as other senior people with broad responsibilities as members. Coordinating committees are few in number in order to foster connections with the ULC, which is focused on its oversight responsibilities.
There are three coordinating committees whose work defines three broad functional areas:
The web pages for each of the three coordinating committees include helpful organizational charts showing the related standing committees, working groups, and affinity groups in the three functional areas.
Of the committees in this functional area, only the Collections and Content Coordinating Committee (CCCC) has a complete web page as of November 15, 2007. Visit the CCCC's iSite at http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k21801. Watch for further information on HULINFO.
ULC Committees Update
HUL Communications maintains a top-level web page for each committee that has a chair, a complete membership roster, and a ULC-approved charge.
These top-level web pages are not created until the chair and the membership have been chosen and the charge has been approved.
Updates to Online Information
Chairs are asked to e-mail information on changes to memberships and charges to email@example.com.
Only chairs have been authorized by the ULC to submit changes.
The ULC strongly recommends that each of its committees maintain an iSite, open to all Harvard IP addresses, to which meeting minutes, working documents, and relevant materials, such as white papers or links to articles of strategic importance, can be posted.
When authorized by committee chairs, iSite URLs will be included on the top-level committee pages.
The Public Services iSite
Please note that the Public Services Coordinating Committee is managing a single iSite at http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k1783 that services all five committees in the public services content area.
For the balance of the 2007–2008 academic year, Wadsworth House will post monthly reminders on HULINFO regarding committee pages. Reminders will include a list of new minutes posted in the previous 30 days.
The Public Services Coordinating Committee, as well as its three standing committees and its single working group, have complete web pages that are accessible from http://hul.harvard.edu/resources/committees.html.
The PSCC's iSite, located at http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k1783, services all committees and groups in the public services area. Additional iSites are not anticipated.
Of the committees in this content area, the following have complete, top-level web pages as of November 15, 2007: The Discovery and Metadata Coordinating Committee (DMCC); the Aleph Standing Committee; the Harvard Geospatial Library Standing Committee; the Visual Materials Standing Committee; and six of the multiple Aleph Working Groups—the Aleph Acquisitions, Aleph Cataloging and Authorities, Aleph Circulation, Continuing Resources, Aleph Macro, and Aleph Reporting working groups. None of the five affinity groups has a complete web page as of this writing.
